Later Ukraine set two important historic precedents, that positioned Ukraine in the international media spotlight – these were the Orange Revolution of 2004 and the Revolution of Dignity known as Euromaidan of 2013-2014. (Speech at the Conference “How to strengthen the relations of European Union with Ukraine? What about the renewal of the dialogue with Russia?”, organized by “Confrontations Europe” in Brussels, 24 April 2014)
The key word in the title of our conference is dialogue. Are we talking about dialogue as a cultural value, or the technological negotiations with terrorists? Leave the last to the police. Considering that after the occupation of Crimea by Russian troops in 2014, the return to atmosphere, and rhetoric of the Cold War is often discussed; I would like to underline what we should not return to. The political confrontation that has emerged in Ukraine during the past two months has passed through several stages of development. It represents the reaction of civil society to the refusal of the signing of an Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union, the brutal beatings of students on Independence Square in Kyiv on the night of November 30, 2013, and the adoption of dictatorship laws on January 16, 2014. At this stage the government can maintain civil peace only by meeting the just demands of the outraged people, this being its primary responsibility.
