The topic of a nation’s struggle for state independence has never lost its importance in art and international political life. The aspiration for independence is associated with dignity and justice and accompanies the entire human history, like the eternal theme of love. Extremely popular was the film “The Brave Heart” by Mel Gibson, which is about the struggle of the Scots for their independence from England. Much wider was the artistic representation of the Irish liberation struggle, which ultimately led to the creation of independent Ireland. Продовження

The quality of Ukrainian higher education and its academic integrity depends on the implementation of university autonomy. The article of Serhiy Kvit includes the list of the most important issues related to the task of implementation of the new law “On Higher Education” with all needed orders and decisions of the Ukrainian government and particularly of the Ministry of education and science. Author gives the story of preparation of the Law, discovers the main logic of all these steps, points some examples of conservative reaction from the certain representatives of academic community, other threats and challenges. Speech at the conference “Ukraine’s Century of Struggle to Secure Independence”, December, 7-8 2017. Washington, DC.
It is extremely difficult to understand the complexities of the Ukrainian component during the interwar period, despite the relatively short timeframe involved. We see this in the current historical discussion, which mostly is taking place in mass media, including as an integral part of the current political discourse. We have two main problems concerning methodology. The first one – contemporary political correctness is often used to interpret the events of the interwar period and World War II, even though the political context has changed dramatically since 1945. The second problem is related to long standing traditions of Russian propaganda, which under Putin’s direction have gained renewed strength through fake news and historical revisionism that can be described as hybrid post-truth informational aggression on a global scale.

Розвиток освіти і науки в Україні після перемоги Революції Гідності відбувається хоч і з значними труднощами й величезним браком фінансування, однак концептуально і послідовно. Міністерству та Уряду вдалося знайти кошти на підняття зарплати освітянам і ця робота продовжується. Нарешті Верховна Рада України схвалила у другому читанні базовий Закон “Про освіту”. Це справді важливий здобуток. Відбувається імплементація Закону “Про вищу освіту”, прийнятого вже понад три роки тому, а також Закону “Про наукову і науково-технічну діяльність”, якому скоро виповниться два роки. Продовження
Цього року співголова Наглядової Ради Києво-Могилянської фундації Америки, один з найбільш відданих могилянців Вільям Грін Міллер подарував мені свою поетичну збірку «Вінок друзів» (Poems by William Green Miller: Wreath of Friends. – Oxford, 2016), що охоплює час з 1968 по 2016 роки. Автор спирається на свої враження від незвичайних знайомств, друзів, різних життєвих випадків та наукових відкриттів. Його реакція по-різному метафорична: власне мистецька чи релігійно гуманістична, з історичними аналогіями, філософськими роздумами, іноді більш раціональна. Віра і переконаність виступають для нього нерозривними морально-етичними поняттями. Посол Міллер, яким його знає більшість українців, розуміє світ гармонійно, не розчаровуючись в ньому і не нарікаючи на те, що дарує йому кожний наступний день. Його поезії – це тріумф хорошого смаку.
